Back to work blues

Have you ever felt sick at the thought of going back to work after a holiday? and not just because you have had such a wonderful time?

For many, the lead up to a holiday can be incredibly stressful at work – trying to get everything done before you go away. You work so hard to make sure you nothing gets “dropped” while you are away, then maybe a couple of days before you come home you start to worry – panic even!

This is anxiety – a feeling of unease, worry or fear about what may happen.

But what are we worried about?  Did you forget to do something?  Has something gone wrong?  In some cases, you may have unfounded anxiety that you may be in some sort of trouble when you get back to work.

We never tend to think about what might have gone well while we have been away.

We worry only to get to the office and be warmly welcomed with greetings of “How was your holiday?” from our colleagues and an hour later we realised nothing happened while we were away.

All that wasted time worrying about nothing.  So why do we worry?

Did you know that each time you worry about something and nothing bad happens, you are actually teaching your mind to connect worry with preventing harm.

worry = nothing bad happens.

So, the question is, do I worry coming back from holiday?  The answer is YES because subconsciously I am preprogrammed to worry.  However, understanding that worry = nothing bad happens does alleviate the anxiety to some extent.

And no nothing bad has happened since coming back.

So perhaps it’s a good thing I worried.
