A Personal Journey: How Changing Careers in My 40s Transformed My Mental Health & Wellbeing
In the ever-evolving tapestry of life, there comes a time when the familiar contours of our careers might no longer resonate with our deepest aspirations. This was precisely the juncture I found myself in during my 40s – a point where the prospect of change beckoned, promising not just a shift in professional trajectory but a profound impact on my mental wellbeing.
Embarking on a career change in your 40s may seem like a daunting task, but it can bring about transformative benefits. In a society that often emphasises stability and consistency in one’s career path, the idea of switching gears later in life might raise eyebrows. However, the positive impact on mental health that can accompany such a change is worth exploring.
Embarking on the transformation from HR to Psychotherapy may appear unconventional, but to me, it was a natural evolution. The words “stress” and “anxiety” resonated increasingly in my life, sparking a personal connection. Initially, my intention was to assist individuals through coaching in my professional role, but it blossomed into a profound career shift and the chance to co-create “Mind & Mission,” a business venture alongside my partner, Kirsty Ritchie.
When I started this journey I found myself in the depths of burnout, a condition I hadn’t fully acknowledged at the time. Summoning the courage to begin anew in such circumstances is challenging, yet, buoyed by an incredible support system and a resolute decision to avoid returning to my previous professional life, I took that leap of faith.
What I want to share with you are the results of that leap I took. Why? Because they are phenomenal, positively impacting my mental health, overall well-being, and personal satisfaction.
- Rediscovering My Passion and Purpose:
As individuals progress through their careers, it’s not uncommon for a sense of monotony to set in. The decision to embrace a new professional path wasn’t merely about changing jobs; it was a journey to rediscover my passion and reconnect with a sense of purpose. This rediscovery breathed new life into my professional pursuits and injected a renewed vigour into my daily routine. - Embracing Lifelong Learning:
Embarking on a new career path demanded a commitment to continual learning and growth. This process of acquiring fresh skills and knowledge became a source of mental stimulation, pushing the boundaries of what I thought I could achieve. The journey itself became a testament to my adaptability and resilience, contributing significantly to my mental fortitude. - Increased Job Satisfaction:
Finding genuine satisfaction in my job is intricately connected to my overall mental wellbeing. When I discover myself immersed in a career that not only fulfils my professional aspirations but also resonates with my core values, the uplifting effects on my mental health are profound. Experiencing a renewed sense of purpose and accomplishment in my daily work not only enhances my job satisfaction but also contributes significantly to an increased overall sense of contentment and fulfilment in various aspects of my life. This alignment between my career and personal values becomes a driving force behind a more positive and satisfying existence.
- Enhanced Adaptability and Resilience:
Changing career later in life has prompted me to cultivate a heightened level of adaptability and resilience. As I navigate through this uncharted professional territory, these qualities are not only aiding me in the workplace but are also beginning to influence different facets of my life. The ability to embrace change and rebound from setbacks is not just a professional asset; it is a valuable life skill. This newfound emotional resilience not only enhances my capacity to face challenges in my career but also contributes significantly to my overall mental health and wellbeing.
- Reducing Burnout and Stress:
The pivotal decision to transition into a different career path was motivated by a deep-seated desire to liberate myself from what felt like the suffocating grip of dissatisfaction. This persistent dissatisfaction had become a breeding ground for burnout and chronic stress, prompting a crucial need for change. Wholeheartedly embracing this transformative shift became a lifeline, providing respite from the burdens of a profession that had ceased to fulfil me. This significant change not only liberated me from discontentment but also fostered a more sustainable and healthier mental state, allowing me to navigate my new professional journey with purpose. - Heightened Confidence and Self-Esteem:
Those familiar with me might assume that I’ve consistently possessed self-assurance and a healthy self-image. However, I want to clarify that during the transition in my career, I grappled with significant self-doubt and experienced the weight of imposter syndrome. Conquering the hurdles associated with this career shift profoundly bolstered my confidence and self-esteem. Every milestone achieved, each skill acquired, and every triumph served as evidence of my resilience and competence, contributing to the development of a positive self-perception that extended into all areas of my life. - Expanding My Support Network:
Navigating uncharted professional territories not only broadened my horizons but also facilitated the development of meaningful connections and relationships. Building a supportive network unexpectedly emerged as a priceless asset, contributing significantly to both personal and professional growth. The sense of camaraderie and encouragement within these new professional circles emerged as a crucial cornerstone, not just for career advancement but also for bolstering my emotional wellbeing, thereby elevating my overall mental health. A massive thank you to you all.
My journey of changing careers in my 40s was not just a professional metamorphosis; it was a transformative odyssey that breathed new life into my existence. The positive impact on my mental wellbeing was palpable, reinforcing the belief that embracing change, no matter the age, can be a powerful catalyst for personal and professional fulfilment.
