Unlikely champions fighting for change

The term “accidental activist” has emerged to describe individuals whose journey into advocacy was not premeditated but born out of necessity or circumstance.  They often find themselves driven by a passion for justice or a personal experience that demands action.

Recently I saw this with Davina McCall who admits trying to “reframe how the world see mid-life women”.  Following her 2021 documentary, the UK saw a shortage in HRT which was ironically dubbed “The Davina effect”.  While her inherent fame was a catalyst for bringing the cause into the limelight, many are ordinary people with no grandiose plan or calculated strategy.

What sets accidental activists apart is their authenticity.  Unlike those who may meticulously plan their foray into activism, these individuals are propelled by genuine concern and a desire to make a positive impact.  Their activism is fuelled by passion rather than a calculated pursuit of recognition of fame.

In the face of adversity or witnessing injustice, they choose to speak out and stand up for what they believe is right.  Their activism is often a response to a specific event, a call to action sparked by a deep-seated conviction that change is needed.  That’s how Louise and I felt when we left Corporate world back in 2015.  I would never have thought of myself as an activist, having probably had a negative perception of that term for starters.

Accidental activists can be found in various spheres, from environmentalists who, after witnessing the devastation of natural disasters, become champions for sustainable living, to individuals who, after facing personal health challenges, advocate for improved healthcare access.  I think I fit into the latter, after struggles from being poorly treated at work and the situation not adequately resolved.  I had a burning desire to ensure no one ever went through what I did.

It is a reminder and proof I guess that regardless of background or expertise, anyone can contribute to positive change.  Stories every day that inspire us to recognise the power of individual agency and the impact one person can have on the world.

At Mind & Mission we celebrate the accidental activist, we embrace the idea that genuine passion and a willingness to act can be catalysts for transformative change.  Our journey reminds us that activism is not confined to a select few but is a path open to anyone willing to stand up, speak out, make a difference and of course our motto BE THE CHANGE.
