What do our dreams mean?

Many of us will have around 4 or 5 separate dream periods each night, which can last up to 40 minutes.

When studying hypnotherapy, I learned that when sleeping your brain cycles reduce to their lowest levels.  Certain parts of the brain become dormant; the rational thinking part, while other parts become more active; the emotional part.

Some believe that dreams are no more than random misfiring’s in the brain, while others believe your sub conscious is at work, absorbing, processing and filing all of the information from the day creating visuals in your mind to represent this.  Sigmund Freud believed that dreams revealed unconscious, repressed conflicts or wishes.

Many dreams put us in difficult or uncomfortable situations, here are some of the common themes and what they may suggest:

Many of us dream about our teeth falling out, which can reflect anxiety about how other may see you or your appearance. This may stem from a fear of rejection, self-confidence issues or inability to communicate.

Being chased in your dream may also mean that you are anxious about something.  It may indicate a tendency to avoid a particular fear.  The chase can also represent an aspect of yourself you don’t want to face, perhaps anger, jealousy of fear.

Being naked in public is a common theme and depending on who is naked is generally about fear of inability to find yourself or worry about exposing someone else.

Being unprepared for an exam or test can reflect lack of confidence and inability to advance to the next stage in life.

If you fall anywhere in your dream, it may signify insecurity and anxiety about a situation, however enjoying falling may indicate you are not afraid of change.

A dream of being late may suggest you are anxious about taking a different direction, you are running out of time for something or that it’s never to late to do the things you want to.

Dreaming of an ex-partner may indicate that you have a longing for something you once had (not necessarily the person in the dream).  It’s more a sense of stability or knowing that is desired.

Many believe that common dreams have common meanings, just not specifically what we are dreaming about. If you want to understand your dreams, some level of self-awareness is required to be able to link the dream to events of the previous day; this of course can only happen if you remember it!

Happy dreaming…
