What is “Regulation”

If you have ever heard a therapist talk about being “regulated” or needing to “regulate your nervous system,” you may have wondered what that actually means. It can sound like complicated psychology jargon, but it’s surprisingly simple.

Regulation refers to our ability to manage our emotional, physical, and mental responses to life’s experiences. It is the process of returning to a state where we feel safe enough to think clearly, connect with others, and make decisions that align with our values rather than simply reacting in the moment. We might also think of it as emotional regulation, it goes just slightly deeper overall.

Think about a time when you received upsetting news. Perhaps your heart raced, your stomach tightened, or your mind began racing through worst-case scenarios. These are natural responses from the nervous system. Regulation is what happens next.

Maybe you took a walk, spoke with a friend, had a cup of tea, listened to music, or simply gave yourself time to consider what had happened. These actions helped your body and mind settle. They allowed you to move from a state of distress back towards a state of balance, or normality.

In psychotherapy, regulation is not about eliminating emotions. It is about developing the capacity to experience emotions without becoming overwhelmed by them.

Why does regulation matter?

When we are well-regulated, we tend to be able to:

  • Think more clearly
  • Make considered decisions
  • Communicate effectively
  • Maintain relationships
  • Cope with stress and uncertainty
  • Access problem-solving skills

When we become dysregulated, these abilities can become more difficult. We may feel overwhelmed, shut down, reactive, anxious, angry, or emotionally flooded.

Many people describe dysregulation, as feeling as though their emotions are “taking over” or that they are acting on autopilot.

The role of the nervous system

Modern psychotherapy increasingly recognises the important role played by the nervous system. Our nervous system is constantly scanning the environment for signs of safety or danger. This happens largely outside our conscious awareness.

When the nervous system detects threat, it may activate a fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown response. These responses are not weaknesses; they are survival mechanisms that have evolved to keep us safe.

The challenge is that sometimes our nervous system reacts to emotional threats in the same way it would react to physical danger. A difficult conversation, criticism at work, social rejection, or sensory overload can trigger powerful reactions even when we are objectively safe.

Therapy often helps people recognise these patterns and develop strategies for returning to a more balanced state.

A neurotypical example

Imagine Sarah receives an email from her manager asking for a meeting.

Immediately, she worries she may have done something wrong. Her heart rate increases, and she feels anxious.

For a short period, Sarah is dysregulated. Her nervous system has interpreted the uncertainty as a potential threat.

However, she is able to remind herself that there could be many reasons for the meeting. She speaks to a colleague, takes a few deep breaths, and continues with her work. Within an hour, she feels calmer.

In this example, Sarah experienced dysregulation but was able to self-regulate relatively quickly.

A neurodivergent example

Now imagine Alex, who is autistic.

Alex receives the same email. Alongside anxiety about the meeting, he may experience significant uncertainty, increased sensory sensitivity, racing thoughts, and difficulty concentrating on anything else.

The unexpected change in routine may feel deeply unsettling. Background noises that were previously manageable may suddenly feel overwhelming. Alex might need more time, more support, or different strategies to regain a sense of balance.

This does not mean Alex is less capable or less resilient. It simply reflects that neurodivergent nervous systems may process information, sensory input, and uncertainty differently.

For many neurodivergent people, regulation is influenced not only by emotions but also by sensory experiences, executive functioning demands, social expectations, and environmental factors.

Regulation is subjective

One of the most important lessons from modern psychotherapy is that regulation looks different for different people.

For some individuals, regulation might involve:

  • Talking with a trusted friend
  • Mindfulness or breathing exercises
  • Physical exercise
  • Spending time in nature

For neurodivergent individuals, regulation might also involve:

  • Using noise-cancelling headphones
  • Engaging in stimming behaviours
  • Taking sensory breaks
  • Following familiar routines
  • Reducing social demands
  • Accessing special interests

A strategy that helps one person regulate may do very little for another.

How therapy can help

Many people come to therapy because they find themselves repeatedly overwhelmed by emotions, stress, relationships, or life events.

A therapist is not there simply to teach relaxation techniques. Instead, therapy can help people identify patterns that have developed over time, and discover ways of responding that feel safer and more effective.

For some people, this involves learning emotional awareness. For others, it means understanding trauma, attachment experiences, sensory needs, or the impact of neurological differences.

Over time, therapy aims to increase a person’s “window of tolerance” or, the range within which they can experience emotions and challenges while remaining connected, thoughtful, and engaged.

The goal is not constant calm

A common misconception is that regulation means always feeling calm and happy. In reality, a well-regulated person still experiences anxiety, anger, sadness, excitement, and frustration. They still have difficult days. The difference is that they can move through these experiences without becoming completely overwhelmed by them.

Regulation is not about controlling emotions or suppressing feelings. It is about developing a relationship with your nervous system that allows you to respond to life with greater flexibility, awareness, and self-compassion.

In psychotherapy, helping people build this capacity is often one of the foundations upon which lasting emotional wellbeing is created.
