5 reasons to walk everyday

1. It’s good for your heart

That might not be a surprise, but it might surprise you to know that research suggests it might be more so than running. The American Heart Association tracked 48,000 people over 6 years and found that those who walked regularly reduced their risk of heart disease by 9.3% compared to 4.5% for those who ran. The results were similar with blood pressure.

2. It’s as quick as 15 minutes to get a calorific benefit

A fifteen-minute hill climb will obviously use more energy than walking on a level. But did you know that in as little as 15 minutes you could burn 150-200 calories. Small quick steps help you lose weight and for every extra half a mile per hour you’ll burn 25% more calories. Using your arms will speed up that calorie burn even more.

3. Getting out with friends human or furry

There are plenty of walking clubs around or call up a friend, get a good chat along with exercise and maybe wonderful scenery. Or if that doesn’t appeal, why not look around for volunteer dog walking?

4. It can curb food cravings

Research suggests that a 15-minute walk can reduce your sugar cravings, great for getting into shape for summer or if you’ve been trying to give up sugar.

5. Makes you happy

The mental health benefits of exercise have been endlessly proven. A walk at lunch time out of the office could improve your ability to concentrate in the afternoon. It can alleviate depressive feelings, anxiety and stress so there’s no downside to taking a brisk walk.
